Frequently Asked Questions

Product Questions

What does the WaterDog Outboard Saver do?

It protects your engine from internal galvanic corrosion by neutralizing electrolysis that occurs when saltwater flows across mixed metals inside your thermostat housing.

How does it work?

Our zinc sleeve sits around the thermostat and acts as a sacrificial anode. As electrical current builds from dissimilar metals and saltwater, the zinc corrodes instead of your engine.

Will this fit my motor?

We make sleeves for Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda, and more. Each listing includes a compatibility guide, just match your engine model and year. If you're unsure, send us a message or photo of your thermostat.

Is this a replacement for my thermostat?

No, our product wraps around your existing thermostat and slides into the outlet. You keep your factory thermostat and just install the zinc sleeve around it.

Are modifications necessary to install?

No permanent modifications are needed. Simply remove your thermostat and re-install it with the Anode Sleeve.

How long does it last?

Most recreational boaters will get 300 hours, 3 seasons maximum.  Commercial users may get as much as 500 hours as they run 100 hours per month.

Corrosion & Science Questions

Why is my engine corroding if I already have zinc anodes?

The OEM Zincs are far from the thermostat which is the source of the current.  The farther the current has to travel, the more resistance it experiences.  Due to this and the similar electrochemical potentials of Zinc and Aluminum, the closer aluminum is less resistant than the farther zinc leading to holes.

How is a WaterDog Outboard Saver different than the OEM zinc?

We make contact with the base of the thermostat with a pure Zinc anode, this makes it the absolute least resistance path, and since our surface area is large enough to dissipate all the current, it never reaches your engine at all.

Is this really a problem? I’ve never seen corrosion in my engine.

Many owners don’t notice internal corrosion until it’s too late. Once corrosion starts, it can block cooling channels or destroy your housing. Prevention is cheaper than repair.  You do likely have some yellow buildup in your engine, this is not salt, it is Hydrotalcite and Aragonite.

Can water really conduct electricity?

Saltwater is full of ions and acts like a wire when flowing over dissimilar metals. This creates a flow of current in the thermostat and causes ionic conduction through the water into the aluminum engine corroding it at up to 4.9 cubic millimeter per 100 hours of runtime.

Installation Questions

Do I need any tools to install it?

You’ll just need basic tools to remove your thermostat cover. No special tools or adhesives are required for the sleeve.  For most engines that is a 10 mm socket.

Are there installation videos?

You can almost certainly find an installation video of your thermostat for your particular video on Youtube.  That can serve as a great guide to see how easy it is for your motor.

Can I reuse the Anode if I remove it?

Yes, if you check your Anode Sleeve at the end of the season and it is still in tact it can be reused.  I intend to inspect mine yearly and will likely change it since I have the 3.3 Liter, extra cautious.

Will my mechanic be able to install it?

Absolutely, there are instructions in the package and your mechanic will have no trouble with the installation.
